BigCommerce has earned some good reviews from other sites around the web, and I wanted to highlight a few here. We’ll show you a BigCommerce comparison to other platforms via these links.
My BigCommerce Review
I have taken a look at the BigCommerce pricing and how it compares to other platforms and I think they are worth looking at. With their lowest plan starting at $79 a month, they are best suited for those who are committed to trying to sell online. If you just have a few random items you’re trying to sell, or maybe just an ebook, then BigCommerce is probably not the best way to start. If you’re looking to sell just simple one off items, try Gumroad, PayPal, or Stripe.
Benefit #1 – Your Site will Get Set up Very Quickly
I tested out the free trial and I punched in some dummy data into the form fields. Then I chose a good looking theme and the site was set up right away looking spectacular. There’s still a lot of work to get in your own info and products ahead of you at this point but it’s much more user friendly compared to setting up a WooCommerce site. Setting up a WooCommerce ecommerce store requires you to install the plugin, make sure it works well with your theme, and even then there will be some problems. I’ve set up multiple WooCommerce sites and it has never gone as smoothly as just testing this BigCommerce site.
Benefit #2 – Great for Complicated Products
I have not tested this out extensively, but from talking to support and having a look around at the plans, it seems like a great solution if you have customized products that can get complicated. If you’re a printing company, for example, and you have lots of fields and variations this can rack up the complexity quickly. WooCommerce makes it very difficult to create complicated producst, and Shopify will cap your plans based on the amount of variations you have. BigCommerce only caps you by the core product, not by the amount of variations per core product.
Benefit #3 – Quality Free Themes
There is a good amount of free themes that come standard with BigCommerce. A lot of the earlier themes look very outdated, but there are some recent themes that look very good. There are also a good amount of paid themes available in the BigCommerce theme shop if you want to upgrade to a paid theme that may have extra features. One detriment is that these themes can be more
Benefit #4 – Support
Anyone who is not extremely technical will probably need a good amount of hand holding setting up any type of ecommerce site. If you’re not hiring a developer to set up the site for you, you will need some support from the BigCommerce site. This alone pays the monthly fees if you’re spending 2 hours a month on the phone with their support staff. I have had mixed results on the speed of response. The first time I emailed a question and they took five days to get back to me, but recently I reached out to them again and got a reply right away. They seem to have improved support recently which is very welcome.
Benefit #5 – No Transaction Fees or Contracts
One of the huge benefits of BigCommerce is that they don’t charge transaction fees on your transactions. There will be credit card fees based on the payment solution you choose, however. Payment solutions like PayPal, Google Wallet, or Stripe generally charge around 2.5-3% per transaction. There are no contracts with BigCommerce if you choose the monthly plan.
BigCommerce is a great solution for a mid-sized business that’s not ready for enterpise solutions like Magento or Volusion. Also great for small shops that want support for creating and maintaining their site. They are a worthy contender to Shopify and easier to implement than Magento. They are more feature rich than WooCommerce and much better if you’re an ecommerce focused website. If you are setting up your own ecommerce store for the first time without a ton of technical experience, I highly encourage you to not go the open source route such as with WooCommerce or Prestashop, and instead choose a supported service like BigCommerce or Shopify.
